WWE Criticized for Referencing Tragic MH17 Flight During Battleground PPV

The WWE has been criticized for referencing the gunning down of Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 during a segment in its Battleground pay-per-view last night (July 20th).

The segment saw Rusev and his manageress Lana conduct one of their typical pro-Russia, anti-USA speeches before Rusev’s match against the “Real American” Jack Swagger, but took it a step too far when Lana confronted the fans in attendance about their blaming of Russia for “recent current events,” a clear reference to the growing concern that the Russian government was behind the attack on flight MH17.

Watch a clip of the segment below.

Rusev and Lana’s gimmick involves them routinely praising Russian president Vladimir Putin and mocking the WWE’s US audience, but the promo they cut at Battleground was still a little over-the-top even by the WWE’s usual standards.
