Travel Squibs: Morgans Hotel Ups Image of Urban Wales

SQUIB: a : a short humorous or satiric writing or speech; b : a short news item. (Merriam-Webster)

This Travel Squib hopes to improve the image of Swansea, Wales – one hotel at a time.

Swansea has a reputation for being a working class town — a decent size city, but less of a tourist attraction than Cardiff. But, redevelopment in the city’s marina and recent commemorations of great Welsh poet Dylan Thomas and his work refocused some sunshine on Swansea.

The Morgans Hotel stands very near that marina and does its part to build up Swansea’s image as a legitimate European travel destination. Once the home of Swansea Harbour Trust, the 112-year-old building is now a luxury hotel in the heart of the city with rooms starting just north of £60 per night (about $90 U.S.).

The rooms are richly furnished and modernized. They set off an odd counterpoint to the classic Victorian exterior, but that’s a minor complaint. The resident space is comfortable whenever your tour brings you back to the room.

The Morgan’s Bar is a particular highlight of the property with its new menu of specially prepared cocktails. If you want something a little sweeter, try the Morgans Boutique.

A local hotspot for socializing and events, the Morgans offers a chance to stay comfortably in a central location with the built-in opportunity to “people watch” the locals.
