Episode 3.12 “The Wild Hunt”

“Grimm” returns to follow-up on Nick’s (David Giuntoli) not-so-smooth introduction to Monroe’s (Silas Weir Mitchell) parents, the wesen scalping men in uniform, Adalind’s (Claire Coffee) endless pregnancy, Renard’s (Sasha Roiz) overseas cellphone bill and the future of Monroe and Rosalee’s (Bree Turner) relationship.

As “Grimm’s” mythology expands, we learn that wesen, or at least Blutbaden don’t believe in mixed marriages. Monroe’s parents, Bart (Chris Mulkey) and Alice (Dee Wallace) don’t approve of his relationship with Fuchsbau, Rosalee but what’s even more upsetting is the fact that their son’s best buddy is a Grimm.

Bart and Alice’s old world attitude about Monroe’s lifestyle doesn’t end up costing him his fianceé and best friend, as his parents eventually come around. It’s a cute subplot that’s good for a few laughs and adds a little more depth our understanding of the wesen world. It’s obvious Monroe and Rosalee are very much in love and Bart and Alice should be thrilled their son found a woman willing to live with his cuckoo clock collection and wall-to-wall Christmas decorations.

The real drama in “Revelation” comes from the Wildesheer scalping cops and soldiers in Portland and Adalind’s narrow escape from Prince Viktor’s Verrat agents in Vienna. Finally, there’s some real movement in this storyline when Renard tasks Sebastien (Christian Lagadec) and Meisner (Damien Puckler) with getting Adalind to safety and her child out of the royal family’s clutches. When Viktor’s men come to take Adalind away, Meisner, posing as her lover, shoots one and Adalind uses her powers to send a pen from a night table into the other man’s eye. Meisner thanks her for saving him, but Adalind isn’t quite sure if was her or her unborn child that sent the pen flying. It looks like she’ll find out soon, however, as she goes into labor at Meisner’s secluded family cabin at the end of the hour.

Back in Portland, it’s pretty much standard operating procedure as Nick tries to figure out what exactly is making off with scalps and leaving a mess of body parts behind. With help from Monroe, Rosalee and Juliette (Bitsie Tulloch), Nick learns he’s up against a formidable wesen whose arrival in Portland is a bad omen, according to Bart.

Both of Monroe’s parents make overtures to their son and potential future daughter-in-law when they realize the effect their actions are having on the family. Alice stops by Rosalee’s spice shop and suggests the two engage in some sort of wesen acquaintance ritual that involves woging and touching cheeks. Meanwhile, Bart pleads his case to Monroe when Alice goes off to see Rosalee. Nick stops by and Monroe tells his father about their plans to take on the Wildesheer. Dad is against it, but he realizes Monroe and Nick can’t handle the powerful wesen on their own.

The Wildesheer (there’s actually two of them) show up at the trailer just as Nick and Monroe are preparing to go to battle. They appear to be outmatched by the two wesen, but when Bart arrives to provide back up, Nick is able to scalp the beasts and subdue them.

The conclusion to the Wildesheer storyline isn’t especially exciting, but at least Bart learns that it’s possible to fight alongside a Grimm, not just against one. The episode concludes with an awkward dinner with the three couples, as Bart and Alice slowly come around to the idea of their son marrying a Fuchsbau with a Grimm as a his best man. Meanwhile in Vienna, Adalind is in desperate need of an epidural as the royal demon baby is about to arrive. Things are getting scary in Austria and if Bart’s premonition is correct, the same could be said for Portland, very soon.
