Dinner with your significant other’s parents can be stressful, but when the conversation turns to topics like drug addiction, jail time and false teeth, you know things have reached a whole new level of awkward. Such is the case for Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell), as he accompanies Rosalee (Bree Turner) on a visit to her mother and sister, whom she hasn’t seen in seven years.

Last week, we learned that Rosalee had been through a “rough patch” a while back and in this episode, we get a better idea of just how “rough” it was. Though her mother seems to have forgiven Rosalee for missing her father’s funeral, her sister DeEtta (Laura Faye Smith) isn’t over it. Things get tense between the two sisters, forcing Rosalee to finally explain why she didn’t show up for the funeral; she was in jail.

Though she currently counts a Grimm detective as a friend and a Blutbad as her boyfriend, Rosalee used to hang out with a much worse crowd, which coupled with drug abuse, got her put behind bars. Thankfully, her admission seems to have cleared the air between Rosalee and her sister, who wogels into a Fuchsbau and warns Monroe that she’ll kill him if he breaks her “little sister’s” heart. Aww.

Back in Portland, Nick (David Giuntoli) and Hank (Russell Hornsby) investigate the deaths of several employees of a security firm, all of whom served together in Iraq. One of the men, Ron Hurd (Hey, it’s “Agent Charlie Francis” from “Fringe,” Kirk Acevedo), is approached by a young woman named Frankie (Emily Rios) at the VFW hall. She reveals a series of scars on her forearm and demands he admit to what he did. Shortly after, Hurd is killed at home by a Wesen. His co-worker, Troy Dodge (Todd A, Robinson) and his wife, Betsy (Amy Newman) suffer a similar fate, shortly after Troy reveals his plans to confess to his wife.

When the detectives connect a murder in Arizona to the local cases, they question the group’s commanding officer, Colonel Desai (Dennis Adkins). The colonel reveals that the men tormented the locals in Iraq and raped Army Specialist, Frankie Gonzalez. At the time, the colonel could do little to punish the group of military contractors and soldiers, but tells Nick and Hank they deserve what they got.

A little digging around in the trailer reveals the culprit to be a Manticore, part Lowen and part scorpion. The detectives assume Frankie is the Manticore, but when they catch her confronting Jim McCabe (Gonzalo Menendez), the head of the security firm that Troy and Ron worked for and one of the men involved in the rape, she reveals herself to be a bird-like Steinadler, not a Manticore. So who else could be responsible for the murders? According to Frankie, the only other person who knows about what happened in Iraq is the colonel.

Frankie calls the colonel with the detectives and he confesses to lying about being in the hospital, fully aware that they are listening in. The colonel’s only concern is getting justice for Frankie and there’s one person left to be dealt with, McCabe.

The colonel confronts McCabe at the VFW and the two men wogel into Manticore form and battle it out. Nick and Hank arrive on the scene just in time to see McCabe stab the colonel while both are in human form. The dying colonel tells Nick “you can’t arrest him for what he did to Frankie, but you can arrest him for what he did to me.” Later, Nick shows Frankie Troy’s confession and she tells him it’s all she ever wanted.

“The Good Soldier” introduces us to yet another beastly wesen in the Manticore while taking some time to develop Monroe and Rosalee’s relationship. Nick and Juliet’s Fuchsbau houseguest, Alicia is MIA while in Vienna, the big news is that Adalind (Claire Coffee) is able to move a coffee cup with her mind and cause chandeliers to burst. Renard (Sasha Roiz) gets a phone call (surprise!) about this and tells the man on the other end that the very pregnant Adalind is getting her powers back. This might not be good news for Renard and his allies, but it’s certainly good news for “Grimm.”
