Danny Green: I Probably Won’t Fight Again

Aussie champ Danny Green says his time in the ring as professional boxer is likely up.

The two-time cruiserweight world title holder admitted that life, as opposed to his physical or mental condition, had caught up with the 40-year-old.

“I haven’t fought since I won the world title on November 21, 2012 and I most probably won’t fight again,” Green told the Gold Coast Bulletin.

“I don’t like saying that and if you’ve been successful boxing is one of the most addictive sports.

“I’m still physically in very good condition and I train most days.

“Mentally I still have the desire as well but I’ve got to be smart and look further down the track.

“My kids are nearly six and nearly 12 now and hopefully I have many more years left in my life and I want to make sure those years left are productive.”

While fellow Australian Anthony Mundine recently experienced a career revival of sorts, Green is ready to back away from the spotlight.

Green says there is more of a “chance of me fighting Muhammad Ali” than a rematch with Mundine and remains bitter over the 2006 loss in which he went the distance before losing on an unanimous points decision.

Gracious in defeat at the time, Green still rues having to fight at Mundine’s weight class, forced to lose 10kg in the leadup.

According to Green, offers to continue his career are still coming in, but are nothing of substance.

“I’ve had a few offers but in all reality the offers have been from people looking to gain publicity for themselves by calling me out,” he said.

“Their offers had no substance and there was nothing serious about it.

Green captured the light-heavyweight crown a year after the Mundine loss, retiring and returning to claim the cruiserweight titles in the highly controversial showdown with Paul Briggs in 2010 and last year against New Zealander Shane Cameron.
