Shelf Space Weekly: So Excited About Suspiria Edition

The release announcements are starting to slow down. I guess by now all the Christmas season releases have been slated, and there are going to be fewer titles coming out in the beginning of the year. Yet, there are still a ton of horror movies on deck for long after Halloween, so it’s going to be fun. Clear some shelf space on your Blu-ray shelves for these:

The mashup movie everyone was demanding hit Full Moon’s streaming service last week. Since it’s online, it won’t require any space on your shelf at all. You can watch the movie straight, and God knows it deserves your full, undivided attention, but if you want something extra, the “Ganja” version features interactive extras as the movie plays.

Enhanced content seems to be the way movies are going, with Blu-ray modes, Second Screen and services like Yeah! Give Charles Band credit for entrepreneurship though. His enhanced movies include links to purchasing memorabilia based on the film, including lighters and ashtrays. What you do with those lighters and ashtrays is not the responsibility of Full Moon Entertainment. “Ganja” mode also has a Full Moon Treasure Hunt where you can win prizes by spotting Golden Moons hidden in the film.

Diablo Cody’s directorial debut premiered on VOD in August and opened in theaters last month. Now it’s ready for Blu-ray. Since I watched it in HD on VOD already, I can attest that the colors of Lamb (Julianne Hough)’s Las Vegas journey are bright, and the wounds of her burn scars are pretty stark in graphic detail.

Bonus features include commentary with writer/director Diablo Cody, behind the scenes feature and the theatrical trailer.

I guess a new Almadovar deserves some Shelf Space. I’m So Excited, his latest comedy, wasn’t that memorable but the Almadovar completists should still get ready to clear some shelf space. Set entirely on an airplane, except for some flashbacks and subplots on the ground, I’m So Excited is a pretty film with lots of Almadovarian cheesecake that’ll look stunning in HD.

The simple Blu-ray had two bonus features, one on Almadovar directing actors, the other on their publicity efforts.

Scream Factory is at it again with two more ‘80s horror classics, sure to have primo HD transfers and already confirmed for tons of new extras. Night of the Demons features Scream Queen legend Linnea Quigley doing a disturbing nude stunt with lipstick. The plot is about kids partying in a funeral home and unleashing demons with a seance. I didn’t remember that. I only remembered the lipstick.

Witchboard finds Tawny Kitaen plagued by a spirit she unleashed with a Ouija board. Both films have new audio commentaries with their respective directors and casts, new interviews, and what must be pre-existing featurettes and audio commentary because they don’t have the word NEW! in all caps next to the listing.

The Digital Bits reports that Synapse Films is working on a new transfer of Dario Argento’s classic Suspiria for Blu-ray and DVD. The colors alone will make Suspiria a must own, but it could take a while so you have time to clear that shelf space.

Synapse is aiming at a 2014 or even possibly 2015 release depending on how long the 2K scan of the original negative takes. Technicolor Rome and Technicolor Los Angeles are working together. Tom Burton, who restored Blade Runner, A Trip to the Moon and Breakfast at Tiffany’s is on Suspiria, so this is all good news for Shelf Space.
