Syfy Picks Up Canadian Werewolf Drama Series ‘Bitten’

Back in March, it was announced that Laura Vandervoort would be starring in Entertainment One’s TV adaptation of “Bitten” on Canadian television. Now “Bitten” has a home in the U.S. as well.

Syfy has picked up the rights for the 13 episode first season of “Bitten,” which will premiere in January 2014 in Canada. Based upon the first book in Kelly Armstrong’s Women Of The Otherworld novels, “Bitten” follows Elena (Vandervoort), a young woman who is the only female werewolf in her world. After abandoning her Wolf Pack to rebuild her life in another city, Elena returns to defend her Pack from a dangerous threat. Greg Bryk, Greyston Holt and Paul Greene co-star in the series.

Vandervoort is best known for playing Kara Zor-El (the future Supergirl) on “Smallville” and Lisa on ABC’s short-lived revival of “V.” Vandervoort has previously appeared in the Syfy miniseries Riverworld as well as “The Dresden Files,” “Haven,” “CSI,” “White Collar” and she starred in the movie Into the Blue 2: The Reef

“Bitten” will join two other original Canadian genre shows on Syfy: “Continuum” and “Lost Girl.” So far, this strategy has allowed Syfy to have more original programming without actually producing it. Last year, Syfy was considering a remake of the New Zealand series, “The Almighty Johnsons” before recently deciding to simply import the original incarnation for a 2014 premiere on the network.

The U.S. debut date of “Bitten” has not been announced.
