STARZ Cancels ‘Magic City’ After Two Seasons

STARZ  has closed the door on the Miramar Playa

According to Deadline, STARZ has declined to renew “Magic City” for a third season, effectively canceling the series. This Friday’s second season finale will also be the final episode of the series.

Created by Mitch Glazer, “Magic City” starred Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Ike Evans, the owner of the Miramar Playa hotel in 1959 Miami who attempted to force the mob out of his business while dealing with the fallout of Fidel Castro’s revolution in Cuba.

In a brief statement, a STARZ spokesman wrote “We are tremendously proud of the series and everyone involved. From the writers, to the cast and crew, it has been an incredible collaboration. This was a story born from Mitch Glazer’s singular vision of Miami, the Magic City of his childhood, and we are grateful to him for bringing it to life on Starz. The season’s story arc will allow us to deliver a satisfying conclusion to the series, and we thank all the fans who checked in to the Miramar Playa.”

“Magic City” was given the rare straight-to-series order from STARZ, but it failed to draw in the large audience that the network hoped for. The reality is that “Spartacus” has been the only drama to truly breakout at STARZ and the premium network hasn’t been able to replicate that success with its follow up shows.

However, STARZ has a number of new dramas slated to premiere in 2014, including “Black Sails,” “Outlander,” “Power” and “Fortitude,” in addition to a second season of “Da Vinci’s Demons.” Of those shows, the Michael Bay produced pirate drama, “Black Sails” may have the best potential to bring the “Spartacus” audience back for more.
