Ash Won’t Be in the ‘Evil Dead’ Remake

We have serious mixed feelings about the upcoming Evil Dead remake. On one hand, Sam Raimi’s behind it. On the other hand it’s being directed by Fede Alvarez, an unknown quantity at best. On one hand it’s getting a rewrite from Diablo Cody (we like her, for the record). On the other hand it’s a remake of Evil Dead. Sacrilege, darling. There’s no word on casting yet, but Bruce Campbell just dropped a bomb on Twitter when he announced that the character he played in the original trilogy, Ash Williams, isn’t going to be in the new film.

For the record, that’s the character of Ash, not Bruce Campbell. We don’t know if The Almighty Chin is going to be appear in it or not, but apparently neither he nor the new cast is going to be tackling the original role.

Bloody Disgusting brought Bruce Campbell’s tweets to our attention. Bruce’s exact words were, in response to a question of who’s playing Ash in the remake, “No Ash character currently.” Shortly afterwards he elaborated (slightly) with: “Twitter fails when info gets fragmented. Last statement: ED remake is a re-telling. All bets are off & all involved love the new approach.”

Sounds like a very new approach. Maybe this new Evil Dead will be a remake in the same way that Evil Dead 2 was a sequel, i.e. not really. Come to think of it, Evil Dead 2 was a remake in its own strange way. Maybe this new Evil Dead is just a similar movie to Evil Dead, with the same basic set up. We’d support that. There’s no sense in trying to outdo the original film, but using it as a springboard for a more original horror comedy is probably the best way to make the project relevant.

CraveOnline will be back with more Evil Dead remake news after we give you back your hand.
