Walmart Dropping 3DS Price Early

A little more than a week ago, Nintendo announced that it will be dropping the price of the Nintendo 3DS by $80 to $169.99. This new price point will take effect on August 12th. But to make sure they didn’t leave early adopters out in the cold (read also: pissed off), Nintendo also announced an “Ambassadors” program that gives anyone who bought into the system before this August 12th date a chance to download 20 free classic games on the 3DS’s eShop.

Now the choice is left in gamers’ hands — do you wait for the most attractive price point to pick up your 3DS, or do you pony up the $250 standard price now because the 20 free games are too enticing to pass up? It’s a tough decision, but if a scoop via Cheap Ass Gamer is to be believed, you won’t have to pull the trigger on one or the other. You can have your cake and eat it too.

Cheap Ass Gamer is reporting that Walmart will be offering the discounted price of $169.99 for the 3DS on August 9th, two days before the official, worldwide price drop. Therefore, you’ll be able to run out to Wally-world, pick up your 3DS on the cheap and still be able to take advantage of the Ambassadors program before it vanishes. That’s win-win, really. The only lose is that you have to enter Walmart. Wa-zing!

As of this reporting, this news is still considered rumor status. But the chances of this actually happening are quite good. That is unless Nintendo gets wind and has words with Walmart, which also has a fair chance of happening considering every website is now reporting on this news (Sorry, guys). So if you’re interested in taking advantage of this loophole in the system and sticking it to the man, keep an eye on Walmart around August 9, 2011.
