Josh Brolin is Thanos in The Guardians of the Galaxy

This is pretty cool, Josh Brolin, but we still haven’t forgotten about Jonah Hex

Reports have come in that Josh Brolin, the Oscar-nominated star of Milk and No Country for Old Men, has been cast as the biggest bad in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thanos is the death-courting conqueror originally teased in the end credits of The Avengers, and although many expected him to be the main bad guy in the sequel, it now appears that he’ll be making his first speaking appearance in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy instead.

Latino Review first reported the rumored, but Variety soon confirmed it. Brolin has a spotty history with genre material – Men in Black III was just okay, Jonah Hex sucked an awful lot, The Goonies ruled (or… not) – but his performances have never been the problem. He’s a consummate professional who always brings his A-game to every performance, and we’re confident that he’ll make a badass Thanos if ever there was one.

It does raise the question, of course, of whether Brolin will have any say in the physicality of Thanos in Guardians of the Galaxy. The film is coming out in just two months, which doesn’t leave much room for motion-capture. Then again, Thanos’s appearance in the James Gunn space opera could be just a glorified cameo, relegated to speaking in the shadows or just another brief post-credits tease, setting us up for The Avengers 3.

We’ll be back with more Marvel Studios news, since they’re not going to stop making movies anytime soon, y’know?
