Adi Shankar is Producing a New Castlevania Animated Series

The Belmont family from Konami’s Castlevania video game series could be coming back to television!

Collider is reporting that producer Adi Shankar and Frederator Studios are collaborating on an officially sanctioned Castlevania animated series. Frederator Studios is well known for producing Adventure Time and The Fairly OddParents. Shankar has produced the Dredd feature film and several popular fan-films including The Punisher: Dirty Laundry, Venom: Truth in Journalism, Judge Dredd: Superfiend, and Power/Rangers.

According to Shankar, the animated series will be largely based on the Castlevania III video game that was released for the NES in 1990. That game put players in control of Trevor Belmont, of the famous Belmont monster hunters, who was accompanied by one of three allies: the sorceress Sypha Belnades, the pirate Grant Danasty, and Alucard, the son of Dracula.

In a brief interview with Collider, Shankar cited the anime classics Akira, Ghost in a Shell, and Ninja Scroll as his influences for the Castlevania animated series. He also praised Young Justice, the American animated series based on the DC comic book universe that ran for two seasons on Cartoon Network. Shankar also promised that “there will be a lot [of violence and gore]. The goal is to bring hard hitting anime to the America and be America’s first animated series for adults.”

When asked about the music for the series, Shankar replied that “the first thing I thought about was music and how we needed to avoid the traditional sword-and-sandal orchestra cliche and use the heavy metal electro guitar vibe found in the early games.”

It remains to be seen if the Castlevania animated series gets off the ground in the near future. Frederator Studios was developing a movie based on Castlevania III back in 2008 with a script by Warren Ellis, which didn’t make it out of development hell. But we’ve got to admit that we’d love to see it happen this time!
