Netflix Announces ‘The Dark Crystal’ Original TV Series

35 years ago, Jim Henson released one of his most daring projects ever: The Dark Crystal, a dark adventure film that was made entirely with puppets and animatronic characters. And while the film wasn’t a blockbuster, it has become a cult classic and one of Henson’s most beloved properties. Now, The Dark Crystal is finally getting a full-fledged comeback on Netflix!

Netflix and The Jim Henson Company have jointly announced The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, a ten-episode prequel series that will take place decades before the original movie. Director Louis Leterrier is overseeing the show with former Lost executive producer, Javier Grillo-Marxuach, Will Matthews, and Jeffrey Addiss. The new series will be filmed later this year, and it will continue the Henson tradition of using advanced puppetry to bring its characters to life.

Netflix has released the first teaser video for Age of Resistance, which offers some archival footage of Henson speaking about the film as well as an early glimpse of the work going into the show.

“Louis Leterrier is passionate about the world of The Dark Crystal and has an incredible creative vision for the series,” said Henson CEO Lisa Henson in a statement. “He brings this passion to every facet of the production as he leads the talented team of artists and writers that are bringing this entire universe to life. Netflix has a deep respect for my father’s original work and the many people it inspired. They are the perfect partners to create this next epic chapter in The Dark Crystal story for new fans and the loyal fans who have waited so long for more adventures from this world.”

A release date has not yet been announced, but Age of Resistance is likely to premiere in either 2018 or 2019.
