Superman Watches The Watchmen in DC’s ‘Doomsday Clock’

Alan Moore purists may scream bloody murder over this, but it’s gonna happen. The characters from Watchmen are going to collide with DC Comics’ biggest superhero in Doomsday Clock, a new event miniseries coming this fall.

Late last night, Syfy Wire was the first to report that writer Geoff Johns and artist Gary Frank will reunite for Doomsday Clock, which will primarily focus on Superman meeting the god-like Doctor Manhattan from Moore and Dave Gibbons’ iconic comic book series. Johns and Frank were most recently teamed on DC Universe Rebirth #1, which first teased the DC/Watchmen crossover when the Comedian’s button was discovered in the Batcave. On twitter, Johns noted that the final issue count for Doomsday Clock has not been decided, and that more details will be announced at Comic-Con.

This story has been building since the beginning of DC Rebirth, and the next payoff will come in The Flash #22, the concluding chapter of “The Button” crossover. Presumably, Batman and the Flash’s investigation into the Comedian’s button will eventually lead Superman on a collision course with Doctor Manhattan. In a statement released by DC Comics, Frank said that “Doomsday Clock is a story for fans who love the DC Universe and Watchmen and want to see what a master of this genre creates when he puts them together,” says Frank. “As for my artistic approach to the series, each panel is extremely detailed and I am constantly thinking through the position of every single element.”

Johns has spent most of the last year focusing on DC’s live-action adaptations as the Chief Creative Officer. This project will mark his return to comics after a long hiatus. “It’s time,” explained Johns. “Last year, the DC Universe confronted the legacy of Watchmen in Rebirth the way Watchmen confronted the legacy of superhero comics three decades ago. Thematically, and metaphorically, there was no better choice than to use Dr. Manhattan. If you’re going to have a conflict between optimism and pessimism, a battle between the very forces of hope and despair, you need to have someone who personifies the cynicism that has leaked into our hearts and also has the ability to affect the entire DCU.”

Doomsday Clock # 1 will be released in November.
