Marvel’s ‘Runaways’ TV Series Is Coming To Hulu

Netflix made a big splash with its multi-year and multi-series agreement with Marvel TV that led to Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher, and The Defenders getting their own shows. But now, Hulu will finally have a Marvel TV series to call its own.

Deadline is reporting that Marvel’s Runaways has been ordered to series by Hulu, with Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage adapting the comic book series that was created by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona. The premise of Runaways is that a group of teens discover that their parents are secretly supervillians known as the Pride, and the children fight back the only way they know how.

Runaways had been in development as a potential feature film for several years before Marvel Studios apparently gave up on it. Because of the age of the leading characters, Runaways will also be a rare opportunity for Marvel to go after the YA crowd, which is probably why Schwartz and Savage were attached to this project.

In a statement, Schwartz said “I’m a long-time fan of Runaways and couldn’t be more excited to bring Brian and Adrian’s characters to life.” Savage added that “Josh and I can’t wait to get to work for Marvel and Hulu.”

Despite the widespread critical appeal of the Runaways comic, it has had a spotty publication history since its debut in 2003. There isn’t currently a Runaways comic being published by Marvel, but that will probably change closer to the debut of this series.

Schwartz and Savage are slated to be co-showrunners of Runaways, with Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb. It’s not clear from the initial story on Deadline if this series will take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but we wouldn’t bet against it.
