Facebook Wants to Turn Your Photos Into Works of Art

Mark Zuckerberg has revealed a new feature that he’s looking to bring to Facebook, with it set to turn photos you post to the social network into works of art.

Zuckerberg unveiled the new photo editing tool via his Facebook page, revealing how it would be able to alter a user’s photo or video in real-time in order to emulate the style of a popular painted. Zuckerberg debuted the feature, which he calls “style transfer,” by way of a video of his dog. The AI technique works by showing it a painting, with it then copying its style and mimicking it for your own image.

Zuckerberg later posted a series of videos also captured using the style transfer technique:

The new effect is similar to Prisma, an AI-powered app that allows users to transform their images using a variety of filters. However, unlike Prisma the style transfer will operate in real-time, meaning that it will alter your photos and your videos instantaneously.

The specifics of the style transfer haven’t been outlined, though considering the continued popularity of photo filters it will likely go down well with Facebook’s users. Zuckerberg has not revealed when this new feature will be making its way to the social network, only that it will arrive “soon.”
