MTV Embraces Fantasy In New Trailer For The Shannara Chronicles

At last night’s Video Music Awards, Kanye West made a really confusing speech that left everyone wondering “wtf?!” But for people who watch MTV for scripted content, the big draw was the first trailer for The Shannara Chronicles, which also happens to be MTV’s first ever fantasy series.

Novelist Terry Brooks created The Shannara Chronicles in 1977 and he has written numerous books in the series. The setting for the Shannara novels is a time period in the future after the fall of civilization as we know it leads to the return of magic, elves and other creatures previously thought to be myths and legends.

Iron Man director Jon Favreau is executive producing the ten episode first season of The Shannara Chronicles, and the project was developed for television by Smallville creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. The story for the TV series is based on the second book, The Elfstones of Shannara, which finds a human paired up with an Elven Princess and a human/elf hybrid to stop a demon army from devastating their world.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles director Jonathan Liebesman helmed the pilot episode of The Shannara Chronicles, and some of his style is apparent in the trailer above, The series stars genre veterans Manu Bennett and John Rhys-Davies alongside Poppy Drayton, Austin Butler, and Ivana Baquero.

The Shannara Chronicles will debut in January 2016 on MTV.
