Earlier this year, police publicly searched the home of Subway spokesman Jared Fogle while investigating child porn allegations. Subway quickly cut ties with Fogle, but the drama is only beginning. Today, the full extent of Fogle’s crimes have been revealed and they are far more horrifying than anything previously reported in the case.
The Associated Press is reporting that Fogle has reached a deal to plead guilty to numerous sex crime allegations, including charges that he paid for sex with girls as young as 13 and 14 years old. Among the allegations set forth by prosecutors, Fogle recruited prostitutes to help him find underage girls for sex and he used his charitable foundation and his ties to Subway to further his predatory activities.
The settlement with prosecutors reveals that Fogle will pay out $1.4 million dollars to his victims, 14 total, who will receive $100,000 each. In addition to having to register as a sex offender. jail time is certain for Fogle. Prosecutors are only asking for 12 and a half years in jail under the settlement, but the case is in federal court, which means that the judge has the leeway to give Fogle a much longer sentence.
Fogle’s defense attorney, Jeremy Margolis said that his client “knows that restitution can’t undo the damage that he’s done, but he will do all in his power to try to make it right,” before adding that Fogle has a “medical problem” and that he “expects to get well.” Fogle’s wife, Katie McLaughlin subsequently announced her intent to divorce him.
There really are no words to describe just how horrible this is. Fogle deserves everything that’s coming to him now that he’s admitted his guilt. And despite its best efforts, Subway is irrevocably linked to the man that it lionized for over a decade because of his weight loss while supposedly on a Subway diet. Jared Fogle is no one’s hero anymore. And he should never have been put on a pedestal in the first place.
