Green Room | Sir Patrick Stewart Relives ‘Masterminds’ and More

When we heard that Sir Patrick Stewart was playing an evildoer with awesome facial hair, whose sinister schemes are threatened by super cool kids, our first thought was that Patrick Stewart was remaking Masterminds, the 1997 family thriller that combined popular elements of Home Alone and Die Hard. But it turns out he was actually making Green Room, a devastating new nightmare from filmmaker Jeremy Saulnier (Blue Ruin), about a punk band trapped backstage after witnessing a murder, fighting wave after wave of Stewart’s neo-Nazi goons to stay alive.

So yes, there are certain subtle differences between Masterminds and Green Room, but when we sat down to talk with Sir Patrick Stewart, Jeremy Saulnier and Anton Yelchin we had to ask about the parallels. Stewart chuckles as he remembers the 1997 film, saying “We thought we were making the next Home Alone and that we were going to be rich as Croesus for the rest of our lives.”

But we were also here to talk about Green Room, the awesome new thriller in theaters this weekend, so we spoke with Jeremy Saulnier about his approach to the film’s shocking violence and to Anton Yelchin about his experience playing The Viper Room. Enjoy!

And of course, you can relive a little bit of Masterminds yourself right now…
