Luc Besson Will Co-Create & Direct New Sci-fi Series For TNT

While Luc Besson is executive producing NBC’s potential Taken series, he’s largely stayed away from television…until now.

TNT and EuropaCorp TV USA have announced that Besson and Bill Wheeler have created a new sci-fi drama called Artificial Intelligence, and Besson is likely to direct the pilot episode. That would be the first time that Besson has directed an American television program and he is also slated to executive produce Artificial Intelligence alongside Wheeler. TNT and EuropaCorp TV USA are co-producing the Artificial Intelligence series, with Matthew Gross, Edouard de Vesinne. and Thomas Anargyros also attached as executive producers.

The premise for the series follows a team of specialists who are assembled by the creator of a rogue artificial intelligence that has escaped its lab environment and it appears to be putting together plans of its own. Part of the team’s mission is to figure out what the artificial intelligence is trying to accomplish while trying to stop it and warn humanity about the new threat to its existence.

Besson is best known for directing The Fifth Element (pictured above), La Femme Nikita, Leon: The Professional, The Transporter, Taken, and Lucy. Wheeler is slated to script several upcoming films including the live-action Ghost in the Shell adaptation and the LEGO Ninjago movie with his brother, Tom Wheeler.
