Archer Goes Magnum, P.I. In New Season 7 Promo

FX’s animated spy comedy Archer exists in its own nebulous bubble world that isn’t quite retro or modern. For one thing, the Soviet Union is still around and yet everyone has smartphones.

But the ‘80s clearly happened in this world, given Sterling Archer’s professed love for the movies of Burt Reynolds and Kenny Loggins’ “Danger Zone.” A few seasons back, the cast of Archer was even re-imagined as the characters from Top Gun in a recreation of the “Danger Zone” music video.

The newest promo for Archer season 7 does the same thing for another ‘80s icon: Magnum, P.I.; the series that made Tom Selleck a TV star and cost him the lead role in Raiders of the Lost Ark. FX must have gotten the rights to use the original Magnum, P.I. theme by Mike Post and Pete Carpenter, with Larry Carlton; as this is nearly a shot-for-shot recreation! The attention to detail means that even Archer’s tattoos are accurate!

For comparison, here’s the opening credits for Magnum, P.I.; which was used from the second season through the end of its eight season run on CBS.

With the exception of the late George Coe, the entire voice cast for Archer will be back for its seventh season, including H. Jon Benjamin, Aisha Tyler, Jessica Walter, Chris Parnell, Amber Nash, Judy Greer, Lucky Yates, and Amber Nash.

The seventh season of Archer will premiere on Thursday, March 31 on FX.
