Sherlock Season 4 Isn’t Coming Until 2017

Back the beginning of 2014, Sherlock season 3 ended with a cliffhanger that suggested that James Moriarty had cheated death. Earlier this month, the Sherlock Christmas special featured an unexpected continuation of that storyline without giving fans a firm resolution. Fortunately, Sherlock season 4 is already slated to begin production in April. But that’s where the good news ends.

At the TCA press tour (via Zap2It), PBS President Paula Kerger indicated that fans have a long wait ahead of them for new Sherlock episodes.

“We do have the next Sherlock announced, that is coming up about a year from now,” said Kerger. She went on to blame the length of time between seasons on Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch’s heavy schedule.

“As you know, Benedict has gotten to be somewhat popular since we began our work with him,” added Kerger. “And he very much wants to continue with Sherlock. As you know, they are produced almost like films, and we’re hoping the next one will be about a year from now.”

Martin Freeman is also quite busy in Hollywood, so it’s not just Cumberbatch’s schedule that’s slowing things down. In fact, both Freeman and Cumberbatch are starring in upcoming Marvel Studios films later this year. Freeman has an undisclosed role in Captain America: Civil War while Cumberbatch will be playing the title character in Doctor Strange.

Sherlock season 4 will likely premiere in January 2017.
