Jessica Jones Season 2 Is a Go At Netflix

Marvel is now two-for-two at Netflix. Last November, Jessica Jones season 1 debuted to critical acclaim on the streaming service. But while it only took Netflix 11 days to renew Daredevil, Jessica Jones’ second season wasn’t confirmed by Netflix until yesterday.

Showrunner and executive producer Melissa Rosenberg will be back for Jessica Jones season 2, and most of the cast is expected to return, including Krysten Ritter, Rachael Taylor, Carrie-Anne Moss, Eka Darville, Erin Moriarty, and Wil Traval. However, there are potential complications. According to Deadline, even Netflix isn’t sure when the new season of Jessica Jones will begin production or premiere on the streaming service.

The biggest issue is with Marvel’s initial deal with Netflix for four original series (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist) as a lead-in for The Defenders miniseries that will bring the heroes together. Netflix’s Ted Sarandos told the TCA that The Defenders has a contractual premiere date, but he didn’t say what that date was. It’s likely that The Defenders will be released in 2017, after the Iron Fist series.

Sarandos also declined to go on the record about the proposed live-action Punisher series rumored to spin out of Daredevil season 2. At this rate, Netflix would have to start putting out more than two Marvel live-action series a year to keep up. But Sarandos seemed to downplay that when speaking to IGN. “It’s possible,” said Sarandos. “Right now, these are produced at the scale of a major film, so they’re long production times and long post times. In some cases we have character crossover, which makes it more difficult to manage production in a way to jam two or three in. It’s not the goal, certainly, to put more than one or two out a year.”

But with Marvel TV fans conditioned to expect second seasons from Luke Cage and Iron Fist, in addition to potential future seasons of Daredevil and Jessica Jones, holding it to two Marvel series a year may prove difficult for Netflix.
