Voltron Lives Again at Netflix

“From days of long ago, from uncharted regions of the universe, comes a legend; the legend of Voltron, Defender of the Universe!”

The classic ‘80s anime series is returning! DreamWorks Animation has announced two new Netflix original series, one of which is an all-new Voltron.

The original Voltron animated series debuted in 1984, and it was a re-edited version of the Japanese series, Beast King GoLion. The series followed five space explorers who fought an evil empire and used five legendary robot lions to form Voltron, an even bigger space robot. One of the space explorers was quickly replaced by the Princess Allura of Arus, who took over the role as Blue Lion’s pilot.

A second Voltron series (which most fans know as Vehicle Voltron) was re-edited from the Japanese series Armored Fleet Dairugger XV. A few original episodes of Voltron were created in America to bridge the otherwise unrelated series.

Previous attempts to revive Voltron have been very unsatisfying. There was a 3D Voltron cartoon, Voltron: The Third Dimension and a more recent revival, Voltron Force, neither of which managed to recapture the charm of the original series.

The other DreamWorks animated original announced today is Trollhunters, a new series produced by Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth). The only description for the Trollhunters series is that it features “a new, fantastical world wrapped around two best friends who make a startling discovery beneath their hometown.”

While Netflix has not officially announced a launch date for either Voltron or Trollhunters, both are likely to premiere in 2016.
