Barcelona Sack New Signing After Just 7 Hours Following Offensive Tweets

Barcelona have sacked their latest signing Sergi Guardiola after just 7 hours, following a number of offensive tweets posted on the player’s Twitter account.

The 24-year-old was intended to join Barcelona B, but within the space of a day the Spanish club had canceled his contract after he reportedly posted a number of tweets that included insults towards Barcelona’s fans, the club and Catalonia, along with praise for their staunch rivals Real Madrid.

The messages allegedly posted by Guardiola, who is no relation to manager Pep, included “Hala Madrid”, a famous term that is typically used as a declaration of praise for Barcelona’s La Liga opponents. Guardiola has claimed that the tweets were posted by his friends as part of a prank, though conceded that he understands why Barcelona had made the decision. He said: “I know I made a mistake. I apologise to Catalonia and Barcelona. I understand the decision, I’d do the same.

“I want to make clear I didn’t write those tweets. A friend took my phone and did it. It’s a misunderstanding. The tweets are from 2013, a joke from a friend, I didn’t even know the tweets existed.”

“Barcelona have treated me very well. I understand their decision. Now I’m going home, we’ll see what happens.”

Guardiola had started his season at the Madrid club Alcorcon, before being signed by Barca.
