House Legend MK Remixes Diplo’s “Be Right There” for a Retro Future Groove

Legendary DJ, producer and remixer MK has overhauled Diplo’s & Sleepy Tom’s “Be Right There” into a groove that evokes the hard beat House anthems of the ‘90s while slotting perfectly in this retro-fueled moment. His overhaul is aimed squarely at a dancefloor whose purpose is dancing, not posing. Centered on a crushing tribal beat and his patented (and much imitated) vocal treatment (sampling a sung phrase, flipping it, stretching it, looping it repeatedly until it’s a hypnotically nonsensical refrain; check here for the blueprint,) the track looks to the past and future all at one.

The Diplo & Sleepy Tom original (here) is a 21st dancefloor retooling of Jade’s 1992 R&B club hit “Don’t Walk Away,” but MK’s version is more in tune with the sexy, attitudinal, New Jill Swing original – bringing it into the present, pushing it into the future, and celebrating House’s roots without succumbing to nostalgia
