Frank Miller Returns For The Dark Knight IV

Later this month, DC Comics will release Dark Knight III: The Master Race, an eight-issue miniseries that serves as a sequel to Frank Miller’s Batman classic The Dark Knight Returns and its follow-up, The Dark Knight Strikes Back. While writer Brian Azzarello and artist Andy Kubert are taking the reigns of Dark Knight III, Miller is already looking ahead at The Dark Knight IV.

While speaking to Newsarama, Miller said “I thoroughly applaud what [Brian’s] doing. But now that he’s doing his, it’s now a four-part series. I’m doing the fourth.”

Miller wrote and drew the first two Dark Knight miniseries, but it was The Dark Knight Returns that became a template for the darker take on Batman that became one of the most influential versions of the character. Even the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is lifting some of its imagery from The Dark Knight Returns.

Additionally, Miller wrote the Batman: Year One storyline that served as an obvious inspiration for Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins. Miller also wrote two seminal runs on Daredevil that redefined Marvel’s primary vigilante before eventually launching his creator owned series, Sin City at Dark Horse Comics. Miller co-directed two live-action Sin City films alongside Robert Rodriguez, before Miller made his solo debut on the poorly received adaptation of The Spirit.

Miller’s health has reportedly declined within the last few years, and it’s currently unclear if he will provide the art for Dark Knight IV in addition to scripting it. Further details about the project are not currently available.
