NBCUniversal Announces New Comedy Streaming Service

While NBC has largely abandoned comedy on its network, NBCUniversal has greater ambition for comedy in its latest endeavor.

NBCUniversal has formally announced SeeSo, a new streaming service that will focus exclusively on comedy programming. SeeSo will attempt to stand out from Netflix, Amazon Prime, and other streaming services with a low subscription fee ($3.99 per month) and a mix of original comedy programming with exclusive streaming of classic comedy series like The Kids in The Hall and Monty Python’s Flying Circus. Episodes of Saturday Night Live, 30 Rock, Parks & Recreation, and both versions of The Office will also be available. And unlike Hulu, SeeSo’s programing will be presented without ads.

“Big streaming services have created a paradox of choice — they’re great if you know exactly what to watch, but if you aren’t in the middle of a binge, the search can be near endless,” explained NBCU’s Evan Shapiro. “By focusing on a specific, yet large niche, and providing a curated experience, we can help viewers find good stuff they might not or cannot find. SeeSo is your neighborhood comedy eatery, with daily specials from a chef you trust.”

SeeSo will launch at least 20 original series in its first year, including The UCB Show from Upright Citizens Brigade; Community and Rick & Morty creator Dan Harmon’s animated HarmonQuest; Bajillion Dollar Propertie$, Night Train with Wyatt Cenac, and The Comedy Show Show.

At the moment, SeeSo hasn’t even launched its Beta, but the website is live at SeeSo.com. In December, SeeSo is expected to begin an invite-only Beta before the official launch in January 2016.
