The Boondock Saints Prequel Is Coming To TV

The Boondock Saints movie became a cult hit after its initial release in 1999, and it spawned a sequel ten years later. While a third Boondock Saints movie remains a possibility, the future of the franchise appears to be on TV.

Deadline is reporting that Boondock Saints writer and director Troy Duffy has sold the option for a prequel series to IM Global Television. Duffy has already written the first episode and the series bible which explores the origins of the vigilante brothers Connor and Murphy MacManus. Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus originated the roles in the two Boondock Saints films.

“For years I’ve been obsessed with telling a real origin story with Boondock, and IM Global TV has stepped up,” said Duffy. “Television is the perfect medium to explore these controversial characters on a much deeper level and to bring Boondock Saints to a whole new audience.”

Duffy is slated to direct the pilot episode of The Boondock Saints TV series and executive produce it alongside Don Carmody, Lloyd Segan and D. Matt Geller. Reedus and Flannery are also being approached to join the project as co-executive producers. Potentially, that could allow Reedus and Flannery to make cameo appearances if Duffy decides to include flash forwards to the present.

However, Duffy will not be the showrunner of this project. Instead, IM Global is currently searching for another executive producer to become the showrunner on The Boondock Saints. The potential TV show is expected to be pitched to various networks as a straight-to-series order later this year.
