Kojima’s Fallout With Konami Might Just Kill Silent Hills

According to GameSpot, Kojima Productions is heading toward its final months of being a subsidiary of Konami. An article published by the site details an apparent power struggle between both companies, leading to Konami enforcing sweeping changes across the employee base. Several previously salaried workers are now contractors, making their future uncertain. Equally as important, it’s stated that by the end of the year the two companies will part ways.

While the focus of this bad news has been on Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, a game Kojima still promises will release by the end of the year, there’s another game that may be shaken even harder: Silent Hills.

For those who have played P.T. on PS4, Silent Hills is without a doubt a promising discovery for survival horror. The short playable teaser stood out as one of the best pieces of gaming media during 2014, and is already considered one of the most horrifying games in video game history.

The problem is that the rights to Silent Hills are owned by Konami. With a release date set beyond 2015, it is planned to arrive after Kojima Productions parts ways with Konami, leaving Kojima Productions responsible for purchasing rights to the title if it wants to continue development.

Kojima is currently pre-occupied with wrapping up development of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, a game considered to be one of 2015’s most anticipated and possibly Kojima’s last. With Silent Hills so early in construction, its future is in jeopardy.

The thing is that Silent Hills has tremendous potential. Konami has been walking on thin ice for several years now, owing much of its positive income to Kojima Productions. If everything goes as outlined in GameSpot’s article, Konami would be making a tragic mistake.
