World of Tanks Sets Sights for Xbox One, Will Support Cross-Play
When it comes to free-to-play MMOs, few have done it as well as World of Tanks. Wargaming’s entry into the MMO market has been a largely successful one, enough that many other games have tried to imitate its success. Now, it looks to conquer more territory.
World of Tanks will make its current-generation debut sometime in 2015 on the Xbox One, Wargaming announced today. Made better, the Xbox One version will have cross-platform support with Xbox 360, ensuring that there’s a healthy player base to engage with from the get-go. All player progress will transfer seamlessly between the two versions, making the transition as simple as possible.
As with World of Tanks‘ other versions, the Xbox One release will be free-to-play with a microtransaction shop available. Presently, the only difference between the Xbox 360 and Xbox One versions are the visuals, although the Xbox One’s superior feature set (Twitch, Snap, etc.) could be seen as a big perk.
In the past, Microsoft has been very restrictive about what MMOs it allows on its Xbox platforms, leading to PlayStation console exclusive games such as Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. However, Xbox’s new leadership is being much more gamer-oriented with its strategy, so the support of games like World of Tanks could become a more common theme moving forward.
