The Witcher 3 Will Run at 1080p, 30fps on PS4 and 900p, 30fps on the Xbox One

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is set to be one of the biggest multi-platform games of the year, and like previous games in the series, fans are expecting it to be a visual powerhouse. However, it will boast a higher resolution on one particular current-gen console, as the PS4 version of the game will run at native 1080p while the Xbox One version will run at a native 900p.

The resolutions of the game were confirmed with GameSpot by developer CD Projekt Red, who had previously claimed in an interview with Eurogamer that they were aiming for a 1080p resolution for the Xbox One, though it seems that they have been unsuccessful in doing so. Both console versions of the game will run at 30fps.

This will likely anger Microsoft, who previously confronted Blizzard about their planned 900p resolution for Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition, telling the developer that it was “unacceptable.” As the Xbox One continues to close the gap on PS4’s lead in sales in the current console generation, Microsoft is looking for greater parity between multi-platform games, and that one of the year’s biggest releases will be more visually powerful on the PS4 than on Microsoft’s console will likely spell poorer sales.

Hopefully in the near future developers will learn to be able to make the most out of the Xbox One hardware and ensure that owners of the console don’t feel as though they’re buying the weaker versions of multi-platform games.
