Watch Dogs “Wasn’t Perfect In Any Way,” Admits Creative Director
Watch Dogs‘ creative director Jonathan Morin has taken his own game to task, saying that the title “wasn’t perfect in any way” before stating that there’s plenty of room for improvement with its inevitable sequel.
Speaking to GamesTM, Morin claimed that Watch Dogs 2 will take more risks than its predecessor, saying: “With a sequel, there is more pressure to push a brand forward and we now have to appeal to fans in a new way. You have to carry on taking risks. I will not do this job if there is no risk in it, that would just be boring. You shouldn’t prevent yourself from trying something just because it’s hard and the solution is not apparent.”
When discussing the original Watch Dogs, which garnered mixed reactions from critics and consumers alike, Morin appeared to be disappointed with what he and his team had created. “I don’t think Watch Dogs is perfect in any way and there’s a lot of room for improvement,” he admitted. “But you don’t always see this when you ship a game. We deliver what we believe the brand should be at the time. But afterward, when you cool down after five and a half years [of development] and take your vacations and people play the game, certain elements become clear. They let you continue to bring what you envision to the next level with the fans included this time, which is where I think it really gets interesting.”
Watch Dogs pulled in great sales for a new IP, with it being the eighth best-selling games of the year, and while our reviewer Jonathan Leack loved the game, awarding it a 9 out of 10, many were disappointed with what Ubisoft came up with. The pre-release hype for Watch Dogs was strong, with its showings at E3 suggesting that it might be a groundbreaking new release. Unfortunately, the end result was a game that certainly had many admirers, but didn’t exactly turn the industry on its head.
It remains to be seen whether Watch Dogs 2 will take more risks and wind up being the game we hoped the first one would be, but at least its dev team have recognized their mistakes and are hopefully on their way to making a title that can give GTA a run for its money.
