Listen: Beck Covers John Lennon’s ‘Love’ For New Compilation

Beck has covered John Lennon for an upcoming compilation album of artists singing their favorite songs, called Sweetheart 2014, for a Valentine’s Day release.

Beck chose a chopping acoustic take on Lennon’s “Love,” which evokes the same sense of bleak oddity that his own song “Volcano” possessed from Modern Guilt. Unfortunately it’s possibly the single worst cover of a John Lennon song ever done, embodying drab, depressing meandering.

Lennon recorded the original song in 1970, with producer Phil Spector on piano. Previously, 60s pop group The Letterman covered the song in 1971, followed by Barbra Streisand the same year for her album Barbra Joan Streisand. She also covered Lennon’s “Mother” on the same album.

Beck will release his next studio album in February.
