New Johnny Cash Record ‘Out Among The Stars’ Coming in 2014

In today’s dose of awesome news, a new Johnny Cash album will arrive in 2014. Out Among The Stars, recorded by Cash and Billy Sherrill between 1981 and 1984, was never released by the country singer’s label Columbia Records, and is finally seeing the light of day following an agreement with the late legend’s estate. On March 24th, the world will hear the songs for the first time. Cash passed away in Sept. of 2003.

“We were so excited when we discovered this,” John Carter Cash, Johnny’s son, told the Associated Press. “We were like, ‘My goodness, this is a beautiful record that nobody has ever heard.'”

Out Among The Stars was recorded during the rise of pop-country, and the 12 songs didn’t mess with current popular trends. Sherrill, who was Columbia Records’ head of artist development at the time, recalls the experience as something of an experiment. He produced the sessions, which included a duet between Cash and his wife, June Carter, and one with Waylon Jennings.

The recordings show Cash’s voice in its “prime,” according to John. “He’s pitch perfect.”

Johnny and June stashed the recordings in their home archive. “They never threw anything away,” John said. “[They have] everything … from the original audio tapes from The Johnny Cash Show to random things like a camel saddle, a gift from the prince of Saudi Arabia.”

“Dad was always uniquely himself,” John Cash said. “He never modified himself … And later on the world would come back around.”

Out Among The Stars will be released by Legacy Recordings.
