Coachella 2013 Video: Phoenix Performs With R.Kelly, Not Daft Punk

French rockers Phoenix pulled a fast one during their headliner spot at the 2013 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on Saturday, skipping out on the heavily-rumored Daft Punk live collaboration in favor of bringing R&B joke R. Kelly onstage instead.

While Phoenix played a selection of old and new songs throughout their set, including new tracks “Entertainment” and “The Real Thing” from their April 22 release Bankrupt!

R. Kelly’s appearance came as an unwelcome and downright laughable surprise to an audience expecting to see Daft Punk after an exhilarating teaser video by the electronic group was played at the start of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ set on Friday.

The statutory-baiting watersports lover joined Phoenix for a live mash-up of his hit single “Ignition” with Phoenix’s hit “1901.”

“Our vision of Coachella is that you can never be medium. It’s either fantastic or a big catastrophe, we don’t like medium things. For us, it’s always been an extreme experience. The first time we played was our worst show ever, and the second time was one of our best shows ever, it’s either a huge failure or success,” Mazzalai told Reuters ahead of the band’s set.

Kelly’s performance collaboration was ultimately a success, but we’d be lying if we didn’t admit to rooting for this song instead:
