Bad news, Netflix bingers; the video streaming giant just increased the prices of its Australian subscriptions.
As of today, Aussies will pay slightly more for their Netflix plans, as Gizmodo points out.
Depending on your plan, you’ll pay between $1 and $3 extra on your next monthly subscription fee after the end of June. Here are the deets:
If you were on the $8.99 ‘Basic’ plan, you’ll now pay $9.99. If you were on the $11.99 ‘Standard’ plan, you’ll now pay $13.99; and if you were on the $14.99 ‘Premium’ plan, you’ll now pay $17.99.
New sign-ups will pay the higher prices immediately (after the one-month free trial), while existing users will be given a month’s notice via email, so check your inboxes.
The price increase is the first since Netflix launched in Australia in 2015, and is partly due to the introduction of the Government’s so-called ‘Netflix Tax’, which will charge GST on digital goods and services from overseas companies. Netflix also tested small price increases on its plans earlier this year.
In a statement, a Netflix spokesperson says:
“From time to time, Netflix plans and pricing are adjusted as we add more exclusive TV shows and movies, introduce new product features and improve the overall Netflix experience to help members find something great to watch even faster. We also adjust plans and pricing to respond to local market changes, such as tax or regulatory changes.
“Since launching in Australia in 2015, we have not changed pricing. In light of the upcoming GST increase, we will be rolling out updated plans and pricing starting June 28 in Australia. Members will be notified of the changes via email and service notifications.”
