Dark Horse Will Publish ‘Mystery Science Theater 3000’ Comics

At some point “in the not too distant future,” a new incarnation of Mystery Science Theater 3000 is going to debut on Netflix with 14 brand new episodes, a new host, and a new cast. But that’s not the only thing coming out of the Satellite of Love. There is finally going to be a Mystery Science Theater 3000 comic book series, courtesy of Dark Horse Comics!

Dark Horse has announced a new deal that will not only bring MST3K into the comic book realm, but also include “a variety of Dark Horse–designed products.” According to Dark Horse Vice President of Publishing, Randy Stradley, the company has pursed this deal for the better part of three decades.  “I first encountered the show in 1992, and immediately fell in love with both the concept and the characters. I began inquiring about the license in 1993, and now—a mere twenty-four years later—we have Comics Sign!”

Series creator Joel Hodgson will be working with Dark Horse to create the MST3K comic, but no further details about the project were revealed. But if the comic is anything like the show, it would probably find a way to mock classic comics and more modern titles as well. But if nothing else, the comics could also explore what life is like on the Satellite of Love when Joel/Mike/Jonah and the bots aren’t forced to watch cheesy movies. The theme song has always told us not to worry about how they eat and sleep, and other science facts. But damn it, we want to know!

The great thing about the comics medium is that this could conceivably pull aspects from all three incarnations of Mystery Science Theater 3000, or even introduce a new host character. But it’s also a pretty safe bet that the comic will feature Jonah Ray’s new character, Jonah Heston, as well as Felicia Day’s Kinga Forrester, and Patton Oswalt’s TV’s Son of TV’s Frank.
