In ‘I’m Better,’ Her New Single and Video, Missy Elliott Nods to and Fuses Disparate Influences

Only Missy Elliott could nod toward trap in a sparse, hypnotic music track, and Sia in the accompanying video, and in doing so underscore her own originality and future-forward vision. The clip for “I’m Better,” which dropped at midnight after a series of teasing tweets last night by Missy, at times evokes the freakier elements of the movie The Wiz, shifting sets that evoke spaceships, submarines, and an underwater lair. The video – co-directed by Missy and Dave Meyers, co-choreographed by Missy and Sean Bankhead, and featuring Lamb – fits snugly in Missy’s groundbreaking oeuvre, illustrating yet again the intermingled nature of her visual and sonic styles.
