Tough Mudder 2017: Here Are The New, Insane Obstacles

Each year Tough Mudder finds new ways to push their participants through the brink of Hell. They just showed the world 2017 will be no different.

The “toughest event on the planet” just debuted their new obstacles for the upcoming season. And boy, do they look fun.

Let’s just look at the names first, shall we?

Here’s the list of the new obstacles racers will have to look forward to on the 10-12 mile course next year:

  • Snot Rocket
  • Black Hole
  • Stage Five Clinger
  • Kong
  • August Gloop
  • Funky Monkey – The Revolution
  • Arctic Enema – The Rebirth
  • The Reach Around

If you’re a previous Tough Mudder finisher, AKA Legionnaire, congratulations, you’ll finish in a Legionnaire-only lane customized for your very own special form of Hell.

Enhanced Legionnaire Lanes:

Snot Rocket (Augustus Gloop Legionnaire Lane): Before attempting to enter the vertical tube of this kicked-up Augustus Gloop, participants must pull their way through a steel fence-topped trench while floating on their back with only a few inches of air between water’s surface and the fence.

Black Hole (Birth Canal Legionnaire Lane): Participants must crawl and push their way through a confining gauntlet of 100 lb water-filled barriers suspended above them in total darkness.

Stage Five Clinger (The Reach Around Legionnaire Lane): In addition to scaling one of the tallest and toughest obstacles on the course, Legionnaires will have to come up with a new strategy to navigate across a now 90 degree angle to reach its peak.

Legionnaire Finish Obstacle:

Kong: Taking Legionnaire finish obstacles to new heights, literally, this giant, 30-foot obstacle will have participants swinging like Tarzan, traversing from one floating ring to another with increasing distance between them.

NEW 2017 Obstacle Descriptions

Augustus Gloop

August Gloop 4

Participants must enter into a chest-deep pit of water before ascending up a vertical tube. As they attempt to ascend through the confined tube, they’ll be fighting off a waterfall of water as it gushes down on them from above.

Funky Monkey – The Revolution

Funky Monkey- The Revolution 3

A literal “spin” on Tough Mudder’s classic Funky Monkey obstacle. Participants test their upper body strength to complete this challenge while transitioning from monkey bars to a series of revolving wheels – all while dangling over a pit of water.

Arctic Enema – The Rebirth

Arctic Enema- The Rebirth 2

Participants slide down a confined, dark tube head first into an icy pool of water. If that’s not enough, to get out of the freezing vessel participants must submerge themselves yet again under a wall into the icy water before escaping.

The Reach Around

The Reach Around

Nearly 20 feet tall, this takes participants beyond vertical to climb one of our most challenging obstacles on the course. Playing up your fear of heights and adding an element of toughness, The Reach Around will take you to new heights and odd angles.

Snot Rocket (Augustus Gloop Legionnaire Lane):

Snot Rocket 1

Before attempting to enter the vertical tube of this kicked-up Augustus Gloop, participants must pull their way through a steel fence-topped trench while floating on their back with only a few inches of air between water’s surface and the fence.

Black Hole (Birth Canal Legionnaire Lane):

Black Hole

Participants must crawl and push their way through a confining gauntlet of 100 lb water-filled barriers suspended above them, which creates total darkness as they try to make their way through.

Stage Five Clinger (The Reach Around Legionnaire Lane):

Stage 5 Clinger

If participants thought scaling one of the tallest obstacles on the course was hard, Legionnaires will have to come up with a new strategy. Stage Five Clinger is a nearly 20 foot tall obstacle, in which participants must navigate a series of ladders and monkey bars to traverse across while at a 90 degree angle.

Kong:

Kong 1

Taking Legionnaire finish obstacles to new heights, literally, this giant, 30-foot obstacle will have participants swinging like Tarzan, traversing from one floating ring to another with increasing distance between them.

The new obstacles debuted at World’s Toughest Mudder in Las Vegas over the weekend.

CBS Sports is also premiering its series of programs on World’s Toughest Mudder in December. A closer look will be given on the new obstacles on December 15 at 9 PM EST. The competition will air on Christmas day at 2:00 PM EST.
