‘Trainspotting 2’ Trailer Reunites Renton With His Gang After 20 Years

The first trailer for Trainspotting 2 (referred to as T2 Trainspotting, but no one in their right mind is going to call it that) has been released, showing Renton (Ewan McGregor) reuniting with his gang of ne’er-do-wells for the first time in 20 years.

The sequel, once again directed by Danny Boyle, sees a reformed Renton meeting up once again with the likes of Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller), Spud (Ewen Brenner) and the violent Begbie (Robert Carlyle), along with his former lover Diane (Kelly Macdonald). Despite Renton’s claims that he is no longer a heroin addict, it seems that it doesn’t take long for him to revert to his old ways when back in the company of his friends.

The film is loosely based upon Porno, author Irvine Welsh’s sequel to his 1993 novel Trainspotting. The book features Renton as a successful club owner in Amsterdam, who returns to Scotland in order to help Sick Boy shoot a porn film. Though drugs are referenced in the book, Porno is mostly rooted in the porn industry rather than drug culture, which doesn’t appear to be echoed by its film counterpart if this trailer is anything to go by. It does feature a revamped version of Renton’s familiar “choose life” speech, though, complete with references to Facebook, Instagram and zero hour contracts for the modern audience.

Trainspotting 2 will make its way to cinemas starting January 27, 2017. Watch the trailer below:
