Marvel Launches Doctor Aphra Into Her Own ‘Star Wars’ Comic

Now that Marvel’s Star Wars: Darth Vader comic has wrapped up its 25-issue run, the latest character to land a solo book has been revealed.

Today, Marvel and Lucasfilm announced that Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #1 will launch in December as an ongoing series, with Darth Vader writer Kieron Gillen continuing the adventures of his breakout character alongside artist Kev Walker. Doctor Aphra was created by Gillen as Vader’s right-hand woman, and she lived on the lightsaber’s edge while serving his agenda. Aphra’s death had been teased throughout the series, and she even expected to die by Vader’s hand whether she was successful or not. By the end of the series, Vader thought she was dead. Obviously, Aphra escaped with her life, alongside her murderous droids 0-0-0 and BT-1. The new series will pick up with Aphra on the run from the Empire, the Rebels, and Bounty Hunters as she goes back into business for herself.

“What I wanted to do was show what makes Aphra tick,” said Gillen, while speaking with StarWars.com. “That’s the work I feel I’ve got to do with the character, and that kind of push and pull she has between the stuff she does, which is good and bad”.

“We all love Aphra so much,” added Marvel Editor Jordan D. White. “We were overjoyed that she found a way to survive the wrath of the Dark Lord. Now, she’s free to continue her rogueish adventures in digging up old droids and weaponry and selling them to the highest bidder…so long as she can stay off the Imperial radar.”

This marks the first time that a character created for Marvel’s Star Wars comics has had their own series. Whether Doctor Aphra can hold her own book remains to be seen.
