Grunge God Chris Cornell Dead at 52

Chris Cornell, one of the leading voices of of his generation, has died at 52.

The dynamic, blue-eyed, steely-voiced singer, who fronted the seminal Seattle grunge rock band Soundgarden, was found dead on the bathroom floor of his hotel room at the MGM Grand Detroit by a family friend, according to Police spokesman Michael Woody.

The Associated Press is reporting that Cornell’s death is a possible suicide and that his wife Vicky had called the friend “and asked him to check on Cornell.”

Cornell, who fronted supergroups such as Temple of the Dog and Audioslave and enjoyed a stellar solo career as well, had recently reunited with Soundgarden and had played at the Fox Theater in Detroit on Wednesday night, closing their set with ominous lyrics from Led Zeppelin’s “In My Time of Dying”. Cornell, who has been candid about fighting his drug addictions in the past, appeared to be in good spirits (at least on social media), Tweeting a picture of the Fox Theatre marquee after Soundgarden had arrived in Detroit on Wednesday.
