Social media fails happen all over the world, and it just takes one person asleep at the switch to cause one. British supermarket Tesco was in the news early in 2013 when it was discovered that their pre-made hamburger patties had traces of horse DNA. Needless to say, the implication that customers were consuming horse meat didn’t make many happy. Things got even worse when the company tweeted, “It’s sleepy time so we’re off to hit the hay!” on January 17th. The tweet was a pre-scheduled robo-message that nobody thought might seem inappropriate in the context of the horse meat scandal, and they were quickly called on the carpet for it.
