Which Basketball Dream Team Is Really Better?
Kobe Bryant just said that this 2012 version of the Dream Team could beat Michael Jordan's 1992 version of the Dream Team. While this current version certainly does have a lot of athletes, we think Kobe got a little carried away. On NBA championships alone, the '92 team trumps this year's squad by the score of 22 to 7. Throw in the fact that the '92 team featured 11 Hall of Famers and the 2012 team only has two HOF locks (with a couple other possibilities) and we think the argument resolves itself. But don't take our word for it; check out this chart we drew up comparing the players on each team's roster.

July 15 2012 at 10:50 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySo, let's take Kobe's words. He covers MJ and Lebron covers Magic. Who covers Barkley or Malone? Does anyone think Tyson Chandler stops Ewing and/or The Admiral? Who on the 2012 bench can be counted on against the Dream Team bench? Don't talk about being "old". Magic and Bird were the only ones over 30. Dream Team were all unselfish players who cared more about winning then personal glory. Other than Kobe, who has that on 2012?

Who cares how many total championships the 92 dream team had, that has 0 to do with who win the game. The current team is younger, faster and more athletic than the 92 team.

As I look through your list, its clear you just selected all the 92 players, and then said, oh LeBron is great, I'll put a check next his name.
I've been watching basketball for about 40 years. The 1992 team is so much better than the 2012 team that comparisons insult the 1992 team. Kobe is supporting his guys, and he should, but he went too far on this one.

The real problem with the scoring of the matchups is it is only looking at the total caters of the dream team players instead of what they were capable of in 1992. Stockton was playing hurt and could only play spot minutes. Magic had retired due to HIV and was not anywhere near NBA Game shape. Larry Bird's back had totally broken down and he was a hollow shell of his former greatness. Not only that, the big question should be if they play with 1992 hand check rules our current no hands check and Zone defense allowed rule. I'm not a Kobe fan at all but I agree with what he actually said. Not what everyone focused on but what he actually said. He said 2012 could take the dream team in a game but not in a seven game series. He doesn't even predict 2012 would win, just that they could win. Yes, the dream team is still the greatest team ever assembled but fans ate way too hypersensitive to have blown up what Kobe actually said into such a pseudo controversy.

Sure 1992's individual players may have been better, but history shows that star-studded teams are not necessarily the best ones.
July 14 2012 at 3:25 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyMatt, if youever saw Mullin play, you would know he wasn't known for being a great defender and he isn't nearly as athletic as Iguodala. He always defended the weaker, slower players because Richmond and Hardaway were great defenders. He was a much better shooter by far, but not even on the same page athletically as AI... and I'm not even a fan of Iguodala. Same can be said for Chandler and Ewing. Ewing is one of the all-time slowest players in NBA history. Points don't mean they win the matchup.

Well, he took care of that one, didn't he? Malone? He would still be stronger than most today. Stockton, I don't recall being slow, weak, and bad. He'd teach a few pgs a thing or two. On and on... This bigger, better, faster in a non-issue with this 92 Dream Team. The one dreaming is Mr. Kobe.
