The excuse he gave the judge for his behavior was that he had consumed too much caffeine preceding the game. He said that the excessive amount of caffeine "caused a psychotic episode" and that his daughter and son-in-law could vouch for him because they had never before seen him engage in that kind of behavior.
Sands was sentenced to 30 days in jail after being found guilty on five counts of fourth-degree assault. Let's hope for his sake his fellow inmates won't have one too many cups of coffee or soda during his stay.
