In celebration of the 70th anniversary of the year Don Julio González started experimenting with tequila production, the high-end maker of blue agave spirits has introduced a first of its kind, the Don Julio 70 Anejo Claro. It's a 100 percent brick oven-baked agave anejo, stainless-steel pot double-distilled at La Primavera, the distillery founded by González himself, and then aged for 18 months in American white oak barrels. That's where things get loco.
Instead of bottling the already-delicious gold-hued special reserve tequila when it leaves the barrel, it's filtered into a crystal-clear spirit (hence, "Claro"), adding an element of refinement and smoothness without giving up that anejo complexity. Punch up any of your favorite tequila cocktails-whether they call for blanco, reposado or anejo-with Don Julio 70, or just enjoy it a touch chilled and straight up, as this definitely qualifies as one of our new favorite "sippin' tequilas."
