A number of years ago, the Harrisonburg City Schools in Virginia made the mistake of taking photos of their school lunches and posting them on their website.
The idea was that parents would print these photos out and catalog them (note the names and abbreviations in the upper left corner).
This way parents will know exactly what their kids will be getting for lunch each day.
But instead, they ended up posting some of the most disgusting food photos we've ever seen. Instead of letting parents know what their kids are eating, these should be used as Exhibit A in a court case against feeding our nation's children garbage.
Here are some of the more notable photos from the collection. We're not sure if we should laugh or cry.

These teriyaki bites look suspiciously like the things that fall out of a dog's rear end.

Giving slices of white bread a fancy name like "Italian Dunkers" does not a good meal make.

Round wedge, huh? We think in some parts of America this is also called a "slice."

Any guesses on what the brown stuff is in that cup next to the nacho-cheese-filled potato? (We hope it's Lipitor.)

Do a handful of nachos and a cup of fake cheese constitute a lunch? There are more vitamins and nutrients in the tray than in the "food" on top of it.

And when you're all done congratulating yourselves on your incisively witty commentary, perhaps you should actually taste the lunches before commenting? Perhaps you should check with the federal guidelines as these are standard combinations (along with the milk, juice, vegetables and so forth barely shown in the pictures) from the federal lunch program, and the school is merely complying with those guidelines. Sure, there are some less appealing items among these pictures, but if they're commensurate with the ones served in our school cafeteria, they're pretty darn tasty. Schools get all kinds of flack for the food they provide, and they're easy targets, but for the insanely small price charged per lunch, they're usually quite a good value.
