One would think that an ambassador would have to be a model of good behavior. After all, they’re representing their homeland overseas, and rude actions could easily trigger an international incident. For the most part, ambassadors are pretty solid dudes, but every once in a while a bad apple slips through the cracks. These 10 diplomats disgraced their positions in some interesting ways.
Gene Cretz
The hardest part about being a diplomat is not calling out lunatic dictators on their crazy behavior. When U.S. ambassador to Libya Gene Cretz sent his missives back home, he naturally made reference to the lunacy of dictator Muammar Gaddafi, commenting on his increasing paranoia and his reliance on a “voluptuous Ukranian nurse.” Unfortunately, those missives got released to the public by WikiLeaks, resulting in Gaddafi losing his mind and Cretz being bounced out of the country.

Tzuriel Refael
When you earn the nickname “The Naked Ambassador,” you can’t expect to keep your job very long. Israeli diplomat Tzuriel Refael was dispatched to El Salvador in 2006 on his first ambassadorial position, but things quickly went south for the openly gay diplomat when he was found outside the embassy with a ball gag in his mouth wearing nothing but bondage gear. Needless to say, his foreign service career ended pretty quickly after it began.

Harry Thomas
You don’t have to be a first-time ambassador to screw things up for yourself pretty badly. Harry K. Thomas had been in the United States foreign service for almost a decade when Barack Obama appointed him Ambassador to the Philippines. Unfortunately, he didn’t remember the No. 1 rule of diplomacy: always say nice things about your host. In 2011, Thomas commented that 40 percent of all male tourists come to the Philippines for sex, a statistic he just pulled out of his ass. Obviously, that remark got him in pretty hot water.

Samuel Kofi Dadey
It’s easy for ambassadors to be tempted with diplomatic immunity and do some pretty messed-up stuff. Samuel Kofi Dadey was Ghana’s ambassador to Brazil in 2009, and while he was there, decided to try to get some lovin' from Nigerian Helen Adewonula. Adewonula, born in Nigeria but a naturalized Brazilian citizen, said that Dadey forced her to have sex with him four times, but since he broke no Brazilian laws she couldn’t have him arrested. She eventually sued and the evidence was so overwhelming that Dadey was forced to settle out of court for $25,000.

Moosa Abdulwahid Alkhajah
We all know that the United Arab Emirates is one of those countries where anything goes. Flush with oil money, the people in power live for the pleasures of the flesh no matter where they go. Moosa Abdulwahid Alkhajah was the ambassador to the Philippines from the UAE and quickly started making trouble. Two Filipino housekeepers who had been employed at the embassy for over a decade came to the media soon after he took his post, claiming that the ambassador demanded that they give him naked body massages and, when they refused, fired them.
