The aquatic activities required for the 2005 film Into the Blue came naturally to Jessica, who is a PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) certified scuba diver. Her mother was a lifeguard, and Jessica claims she could swim before she could walk. The skills also helped her out much earlier, when she did the TV revamp of Flipper.

Despite working steadily since she was 13 (on TV, in film, and even in commercials, for companies such as Nintendo and JC Penney), Jessica's big break came in 2000, when Terminator director James Cameron cast her as the lead in the dystopian futuristic series Dark Angel.

In 2001, Jessica topped Maxim magazine's "Hot 100" list. She popped up in the top 5 once again in 2005. The following year, Jessica was named among the 25 Sexiest Celebrities by Playboy. She originally filed a suit against Playboy for using her picture on the cover to suggest she had posed nude, but later dropped it.

When Dark Angel ended in 2003, Jessica began an impressive run of high-profile movies, including the dance film Honey (2003), the gritty comic book adaptation Sin City (2005), the much more lighthearted superhero movie Fantastic Four (2005), the crime thriller Into the Blue (2005), and the sequel Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007).

Jessica's husband, Cash Warren, is the son of actor Michael Warren, who played Officer Bobby Hill for seven seasons on the beloved series Hill Street Blues. Cash and Jessica met on the set of Fantastic Four and have two daughters. OK! Magazine reportedly paid $1.5 million for the first pics of their first child.

Although no doubt disappointing to some, Jessica maintains a "no nudity" clause in her contract because, she claims, she has "too much anxiety." A nude shower scene in the Robert Rodriquez film Machete was a trick -- she wore underwear on the set the day the scene was shot and they were digitally removed.

When she was 20, Jessica got engaged to her Dark Angel co-star Michael Weatherly, who was 12 years old than her. She had claimed in early interviews that she had a thing for older men, even name-checking the likes of Sean Connery and Robert Redford. She and Weatherly ended their relationship before tying the knot.

Jessica clearly enjoys working with maverick director Robert Rodriguez. The two have worked together on three films so far, including Sin City, Machete, and Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World. Rodriguez plans to return to both Sin City and Machete, but Alba has yet to confirm if she will join him.
